Medical debt is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy filings

Posted by Jonathan Proctor | Oct 26, 2021

A common misconception is that most bankruptcy filings are due to financial mismanagement of some sort; a person overextends themselves on credit or somehow chooses not to pay their debts in a timely manner.  That's just not true: recent studies have shown that almost 2 out of every 3 personal bankruptcy filings are primarily caused by overwhelming medical bills.  Any extended hospital stay or necessary surgery comes at a significant cost even when someone has health insurance; the bill for someone who is uninsured can be astronomical.

And that was the case even before COVID and the strain the pandemic placed on our healthcare system.  With widespread availability of the coronavirus vaccines, more health insurance companies are expecting policy holders to pick up a significantly higher portion of the cost of care.

If paying your medical debt is straining your monthly budget, call me and so we can discuss how I can help.  And if the majority of your debt is related to healthcare, you may be eligible for relief without an in depth analysis of your ability to repay.  Don't wait for the hospital to sue you - reach out today and we'll set up a free consultation so you can put these debts behind you.
